3DWiggle

Windows/ Mac desktop software for adjusting existing 3D images or creating new 3D images from two regular photos.

3D image

In computers, 3D (three dimensions or three-dimensional) is an image that provides the perception of depth. It is made from two 2D images (left and right) that, when adjusted in 3DWiggle make a three-dimensional image. This image slides from one side to the other, or from the left image to right, producing a 3D image without any further equipment.

3D

Means three-dimensional (something with width, height and depth). Our physical environment is three-dimensional. Humans are able to perceive the spatial relationship between objects just by looking at them as our perception is a 3D or adepth perception. This is because the retina in each eye forms a two-dimensional image while our brain processes these two images into a 3D visual experience. Having vision in both eyes is also called stereoscopic or binocular vision.

2D photographs

Standard photographs taken with a standard camera. These photographs have two dimensions, they have height and width, but no depth.

Adjustments

Corrections, alterations and changes you can make to the pair of 2D photographs in 3DWiggle software in order to get a perfect 3D image.

Alignment

Arranging the pair of images inserted in 3DWiggle software in order to create a better 3D image.

3D effect

The effect produced with combining two 2D images (left and right)into one 3D image. 3D effect gives the sense of depth to two-dimensional objects, e.g. photographs. The 3D effect is easily produced with 3DWiggle software.

3DWiggle Player

A free app for skimming through 3D images on your smart phone or tablet. With uploading a stereogram or cross-eye photo from your gallery you can experience 3D like never before! The app allows you to view all stereogram and cross-eye images in JPEG or PNG format. You can also view entire albums in 3D.

3DWiggle web plug-in

A plugin for WordPress and Concrete5 that allows you to integrate 3D images (wigglegram or breezegram) to your business website, portfolio or blog in a matter of seconds easy and fast. It’s free!

3D glasses

A pair of glasses (usually made of white cardboard and containing different one blue lense and one red lense) that allows moviegoers to experience their films in 3D, and generally allows you to see two dimensions at once.

Anaglyph

A stereoscopic 3D effect where the right image of a stereogram usually red in color is superposed on the left image in a contrasting color to produce a three-dimensional effect when viewed through correspondingly colored filters in the form of spectacles (anaglyph glasses). When viewed through the anaglyph glasses, each of the two images reaches the eye it’s intended for, revealing a stereoscopic image. The visual cortex of the brain fuses this into perception of a three-dimensional scene or image.

Animation

When 2 images (left and right) are wiggling in 3DWiggle software, creating a 3D image. During the animation, 3DWiggle allows you to make different adjustments to the image.

Animated GIF

A graphic image on a Web page that moves – for example, a twirling banner or a wiggling image made with 3DWiggle. GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format, while animated GIF represents a particular type of GIF image that can be animated by combining several images into a single GIF file.

Breezegram

We invented a brand new name for images that are softly adjusted in order to create a special viewing effect! They represent a combination of two 2D images that shows only a soft movement on the shot scene. This means taking a series of photos from the same point of the viewer while a certain movement is going on, eg. shots of a fountain where everything is still apart from the water in the fountain. Breezegrams can be easily created and adjusted with 3DWiggle.

Cross-eye image

A type of stereogram where the left and the right image of the stereogram are converted in order to create 3D illusion with cross-eye viewing.

Cross-viewing

A 3D viewing method (cross-eyed method). Aim your eyes so that the lines of sight of your eyes cross in front of the image. When you cross-view, the muscles inside your eye that control the focusing lens contract strongly and shorten. Cross-eye image is a type of stereogram that is made for cross-viewing.

Depth of perception

The third dimension you get in the 3D image, that you don’t have in 2D images.

Digital 3D Camera

Stereo camera is a type of camera with two or more lenses with a separate image sensors for each lens. This allows the camera to simulate human binocular vision. This enables the camera to capture three-dimensional images, a process known as stereoscopy or stereo photography. Stereo cameras may be used for making stereograms. The distance between the lenses in a typical stereo camera is about the distance between one’s eyes (the intra-ocular distance), though a longer base line (greater inter-camera distance) produces more extreme 3-dimensionality.

Free-viewing

Free-viewing is the term used for this special way to see 3D. Free-viewing comes in two types, cross-viewing and parallel-viewing.

Hidden image/ magic eye

A side by side stereogram made for parallel viewing.

Layer

Used in digital image editing for separating different elements of an image. A layer can be compared to a transparency where imaging effects or images are applied and placed over or under an image. In 3DWiggle layers represent 2D images (left and right) you use to create a 3D image (wigglegram or breezegram).

Left image

One of the images taken in order to make a stereogram. Left stands for the left eye, it is a representation a certain scene we see with our left eye.

Loreo

A manufacturer of stereo photography equipment, including 3D cameras and stereo lens attachments for SLR cameras. These stereo photos (stereograms) are in the same format and size as any standard photograph, the only difference is that they contain two side by side images. Some cameras produce cross–eye stereograms, where the right-part of the photo is actually the left image and vice versa. Loreo was founded in 1982, and is based in Hong-Kong (China).

MPO

The Multi Picture Object (.mpo) format consists of multiple JPEG images, the format used in most of 3D cameras.

Parallax barrier

A device placed in front of an image source, eg. liquid crystal display, to allow it to show a stereoscopic or multiscopic image without the need for the viewer to wear 3D glasses. 3D images can also be viewed without 3D glasses with a free app, the 3DWiggle Player.

Parallel viewing

A 3D viewing method (the divergence or Magic Eye method), the lines of sight of the eyes move outward toward parallel and meet in the distance at a point well behind and beyond the image. That’s why it’s called parallel viewing. When you parallel-view, the muscles inside your eye that control the focusing lens relax and lengthen. Side-by-side image is a type of stereogram that is made for parallel viewing.

Piku-piku

Synonym for wiggle (japanese).

Right image

One of the images taken in order to make a stereogram. Right stands for the right eye, it is a representation a certain scene we see with our right eye.

Side-by-side

An image used in stereoscopy, and in 3DWiggle for that matter.

Traditional stereoscopic photography consists of creating a 3D illusion from a pair of 2D images. This image that consists of two 2D images is a stereogram. Side-by-side is a type of stereogram where each of the two 2D images are presented to the viewer so that any object at infinite distance is perceived by the eye as being straight ahead. In side-by-side image the viewer’s eyes are being neither crossed nor diverging, the left eye views the image on the left while the right eye views the image on the right.

Transitions

Shifting between the layers (left and right image) of a stereogram. These produce the wiggling effect or animation. In 3DWiggle you can set transitions with a series of editing options while the animation is playing.

Skew

A feature included on 3DWiggle software that allows you to tilt the wiggling image while keeping the sides on the image parallel (and while the wiggling animation is on).

Stereogram

Synonym for wigglegrams and stereographs, these are animated images that simulate 3D effect by looping two or three frames of an object shot from the different points of the viewer’s right and left eye. Stereograms can easily be created, adjusted and exported with 3DWiggle software.

Stereograph

Synonym for stereogram.

Stereoscope

An instrument in which two photographs of the same object, taken from slightly different angles, are simultaneously presented, one to each eye. A simple stereoscope is limited in the size of the image that may be used. A more complex stereoscope uses a pair of horizontal periscope-like devices, allowing the use of larger images that can present more detailed information in a wider field of view.

Stereoscopy

Is a technique for creating or enhancing the illusion of depth in an image by means of stereopsis or binocular vision. Most stereoscopic methods present two images separately to the left and right eye of the viewer. These two-dimensional
images are then combined in the brain to give the perception of depth, popularly called 3D effect.

Stereoscopic 3D effect

The 3D effect created from two photographs (left and right) aligned in such a way that they create the 3D illusion in the eyes of the viewer.

Stereo photography techniques

Methods for producing stereoscopic images, videos and films. With a variety of special equipment like: stereo cameras, single cameras and paired cameras. This involves traditional film cameras as well as, tape and modern digital cameras. Stereo images are produced with a number of specialized techniques, depending on the result you want to achieve.

Stereo pairs

Two images shoot from a slightly different position. These two photographs create a stereogram (side-by-side or cross-eye), and aligned in layers create a 3D image

Stereo-viewers

Devices for viewing different types of stereograms and 3D images (eg. stereoscope).

Wigglegram

Synonym for stereographs or stereograms, these are animated images that simulate 3D effect by looping two or three frames of an object shot from the different points of the viewer’s right and left eye. Wigglegrams can easily be created with 3DWiggle software.

Wiggling effect

The effect produced with 3DWiggle software, same as 3D image effect

Wiggle (verb)

Move or cause to move up and down or from side to side with small rapid movements. In stereoscopy wiggling means the small shift between the left and the right image of a stereogram that, as a result, creates wiggling effect. This type of stereogram is called wigglegram.

Wobble

Synonym for wiggle
